Environmental Business - Social Contribution Through Businesses

In Japan and abroad, Kanematsu seeks to contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the global environment by purchasing and marketing products that contribute to the maintenance and improvement of the environment and undertaking other business activities. In addition, we undertake business activities that focus on biodiversity.

Environmentally Friendly Ground Improvement Using Lumber

Kanematsu Sustech Corporation, a Group subsidiary, is receiving increasing orders for its Eco Wood Pile, a method of ground improvement that uses wooden piles. Conventional construction methods use cement and iron-based materials for foundation stabilization when building houses and other small structures. Unfortunately, the production of such materials generates large amounts of CO2. Eco Wood Pile instead employs wood, which absorbs CO2 during its growth process, greatly reducing the resulting environment burden. A number of major housing construction companies that value environmental performance have adopted the Eco Wood Pile method, which has been evaluated favorably, and, in 2016, the cumulative total number of houses built using the method surpassed 10,000. In the past, ground stabilization technologies based on wood piles were at greater risk of rot and insect damage. Kanematsu Sustech's proprietary lumber preservation treatment technology, which combines anti-rot and anti-termite treatments, minimizes these risks. And, by using large volumes of domestically produced timber, we are contributing to the revitalization of forestry (specifically, environmentally friendly forest management) in Japan.

In addition, we offer LP-LiC, a method of ground improvement aimed at preventing liquefaction that also uses wood piles. This method has been used in liquefaction prevention following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Jointly developed with another company, LP-LiC involves driving wood piles into the ground in high concentration. Moreover, the technology is attracting attention because it both supports environmentally friendly forestry and helps mitigate global warming by acting as a carbon sink. Going forward, Kanematsu Sustech will continue to find effective, long-term uses of wood, a source of comfort and warmth, with an eye toward environmental friendliness.

Promoting the Use of Electric Vehicles

In cooperation with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., Kanematsu was selected by NEDO*1 to implement a demonstration project aimed at expanding the effective range of electric vehicles (EVs) on inter-city routes in northern California, in the United States, and has begun operations at the demonstration sites. This demonstration project is being implemented in cooperation with the government of California, where consumer EV sales are currently the highest in the country, as well as EVgo*2, a U.S. EV charging infrastructure operator. Under the project, more than 50 new chargers have been installed at 20-plus locations in the northern part of the state, and real time information services are being provided to EV drivers while various data about EV usage patterns is collected, analyzed and studied. The results of this demonstration project are expected to help improve the usability of EVs and promote their adoption in the United States and around the world. Through this project, Kanematsu is helping to reduce CO2 emissions and improve energy efficiency.

Initiatives for forest preservation -- REDD+

Aiming for forest preservation and the mitigation of global climate change, Kanematsu commenced a feasibility study on REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (*)) in Brazil and Indonesia and is evaluating the feasibility of the following triple benefits.

1. Utilization of REDD credit by the Japanese government and private companies
2. Improvement of the living standard of local residents through REDD
3. Protection of biodiversity at the project site

Brazil and Indonesia have put a great deal of effort into REDD as a countermeasure against global warming and aggressively offer recommendations on the institutional design of REDD and its implementation at international negotiations.
Concrete pilot projects between the two countries and Japan are still limited. Our feasibility study is expected to become a major project.
With the study on the realization of this business, Kanematsu plays a part in a low-carbon society and continues to contribute to countermeasures against global warming.

(*) REDD aims to reduce CO2 emissions by preventing deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries, or through projects to this end. In other words, REDD aims to maintain a state where carbon is fixed in forests or the soil in order to prevent it from being released into the air by deforestation.

Initiative for biodiversity -- Sustainable Coffee

Sustainable coffee is a general term for coffee produced and distributed in a manner that keeps the natural environment and people's lives sustainable, as the responsibility of our generation for future generations.

Currently, a variety of NGOs including environmental groups act to promote the production and distribution of sustainable coffee from different angles, including the protection of nature and the stabilization of the living environment of producers, as well as the protection of human rights and the improvement of the lives of agricultural laborers.

As a company that plays a significant role in connecting producers and consumers, we deal uncompromisingly with sustainable coffee. We pay reasonable prices for famers and pay incentives for organic products, and pay rewards for the management of natural resources, which allow producers to grow high-quality coffee stably in a safe environment and in coexistence with nature. Furthermore, consumers can enjoy safe, secure coffee. You can see the sustainable coffee we deal in by clicking on the links below.

Initiative for renewable energy -- Geothermal plant and wind farm

In geothermal power generation, a well is drilled to approximately 2000 meters below ground, and high temperature, high pressure water vapor heated by subterranean magma is extracted. A turbine is rotated by the vapor to generate electricity. The vapor used to rotate the turbine is reduced to water and then returned to a storage layer underground. The water is heated by magma again to be stored as water vapor.
Since geothermal power generation does not release carbon dioxide that causes global warming, but uses heat stored inside the earth repeatedly, it is a semi-permanent source of clean energy.
Kanematsu has been building and supplying facilities for geothermal plants mainly in Southeast Asia for more than 30 years. We have delivered a variety of geothermal power generation facilities in countries including the Philippines and Indonesia. In recent years, we won a contract for Unit III of the Darajat Power Station (110 megawatt) in Indonesia and for a set of Northern Negros geothermal power generation facilities (49 megawatt) in the Philippines. We have already completed the construction and handed the facilities over to the customers. Currently, we are aggressively negotiating new contracts in Indonesia and the Philippines.

In addition, Kanematsu is also negotiating regarding the construction of wind farms. Through the supply of power plants for these renewable energy sources, we contribute to the development of clean energy.

Rice boiled with red beans -- Attention to a low-carbon society Reduction of CO2

On December 2, 2011 we obtained a letter of patent for a manufacturing method for a rice ball made of rice boiled together with red beans

[Steamed rice with red beans produced easily, economically, and efficiently]

Acquisition of patent for production method: Registration number 4875729
Title of invention: Manufacturing method for a rice ball made of rice boiled together with red beans

With this manufacturing method for a rice ball made of rice boiled together with red beans, the number of manufacturing processes is reduced from the conventional nine to five. As a result, the shorter manufacturing time makes it possible to cut utility costs and labor and to reduce invisible difficulties and waste. In terms of the reduction of CO2, an eco-friendly manufacturing method is utilized. The products themselves are highly rated, and have been adopted and marketed in convenience stores.
