Kanematsu Corporation (“Kanematsu”) has begun supplying FAME*1-blended biofuel for international ocean-going vessels together with Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (“Idemitsu Kosan”) and Kanematsu Yuso Co., Ltd. (“Kanematsu Yuso”), a Kanematsu group company (hereinafter, “the Initiative”). The three companies aim to decarbonize the shipping industry through the Initiative, with the FAME-blended biofuel expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 20% compared to conventional marine fuel.

*1:Stands for fatty acids methyl ester, the main biofuel component. Waste vegetable oil is transesterified with methanol to produce a diesel-like oil.

Under the Initiative, the companies will utilize the onshore tanks and offshore loading equipment at Kanematsu Yuso’s Kokura Oil Tank Terminal (Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture). Using biofuel blend tanks, Kanematsu Yuso will blend FAME procured by Kanematsu with heavy oil supplied by Idemitsu Kosan. Then, after quality check, the FAME-blended biofuel will be delivered offshore for the bunkering (fuel supply) of ocean-going vessels.

The FAME used in the biofuel complies with EU standards (EN 14214). In addition, in February 2025, Kanematsu’s Tokyo Head Office acquired ISCC EU certification*2 to build an internationally-certified supply system. This makes it possible to provide a Proof of Sustainability (PoS) to shipping companies, our customers, under the Initiative, as well as to supply and sell FAME-blended biofuel that meets sustainability standards.

*2:An international sustainability certification system conforming to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) of the European Union (EU). It certifies that biofuels and their components are produced and distributed in an environmentally and socially sustainable manner.

In order to contribute to a decarbonized society, the Kanematsu Group aims to achieve avoided CO2 emissions of 1,000,000 t-CO2 by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2031. Leveraging our position as a trading company that connects stakeholders across the supply chain, we are striving to reach this target by reducing CO2 emissions through our business operations. We remain committed to reducing CO2 emissions and achieving a sustainable society by expanding the supply of FAME-blended biofuel under the Initiative, as well as by promoting Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) projects.
