Kanematsu Corporation (“Kanematsu”), in collaboration with TOWING Co., Ltd. (“TOWING”), announces that its programmatic project under J-Credit Scheme Methodology AG-007, “Feeding Cattle Feed Containing Feed Additives (that contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions from enteric fermentation),” was registered at the 70th J-Credit Scheme Certification Committee meeting. This marks the first registration of a programmatic project under this methodology in Japan.
Under the approved project, Kanematsu and TOWING aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 65,000 t-CO₂ annually by 2031. Going forward, Kanematsu will leverage its strength in the food supply chain and collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to expand initiatives that reduce methane emissions through feed additives. Kanematsu also aims to help downstream companies reduce Scope 3 emissions by converting verified emission reductions into environmental value and supplying that value together with the resulting livestock products, thereby implementing initiatives based on the concept of carbon insetting.*
In February 2026, Japan’s J-Credit Scheme Steering Committee approved a new methodology covering the feeding of cattle feed containing feed additives. In collaboration with dsm-firmenich AG (“dsm-firmenich”), Kanematsu has promoted the use of Bovaer®, a feed additive that reduces methane generated in cattle’s digestive tracts, with the goal of establishing a sustainable livestock production system and reducing the environmental impact of the livestock product supply chain.
Under its Medium-Term Management Plan, “integration 1.1,” Kanematsu aims to become “a solutions provider that leads the transformation of efficient and sustainable supply chains.” As one of its key initiatives, Kanematsu is promoting green transformation (“GX”). In the priority area of Agricultural and Food GX, Kanematsu leverages its strength in the food supply chain and works with farmers, fertilizer and feed manufacturers, meat packers, food manufacturers, retailers, and food-service operators to advance a variety of GX projects.
* Carbon Insetting:
A mechanism for incorporating greenhouse gas emission reductions or removals achieved within a supply chain back into that same supply chain—for example, by procuring and retiring carbon credits generated by producers or using such reductions to lower product-related emissions. It contrasts with “carbon offsetting,” which uses environmental value generated outside the supply chain, such as carbon credits created by companies belonging to other supply chains.
◆List of Kanematsu’s carbon insetting initiatives (press releases)
- Kanematsu and dsm-firmenich start promoting joint initiatives for reducing the environmental impact of livestock products by utilizing a feed additive that reduces cattle methane emissions
- Kanematsu begins supplying domestically produced rice combined with added environmental value to Skylark
- Kanematsu joins with Shikishima Farm and dsm-firmenich for the world’s first commercial farm implementation of methane-reducing feed additive Bovaer® on Japanese Black cattle
- Kanematsu Enables the Insetting Supply of Domestically Produced Rice with Environmental Value to Chikaranomoto Company — Advancing Sustainable Domestic Rice Production and Supply Through a Face-to-Face Supply Chain Partnership—
