Kanematsu Corporation (hereinafter “Kanematsu”) is pleased to announce that, as of FY2024, it has achieved the greenhouse gas (GHG) targets set in 2022—carbon neutrality by 2025, carbon negative at minus 1,000,000 t-CO2 by 2030 and 2050—ahead of schedule. Furthermore, following this achievement, we have formulated a new basic approach and policies on climate change, as well as new GHG indicators and targets.

< New climate change-related framework >

  1. Basic approach and policies: Control CO₂ emissions below the current 30,000 t-CO₂ mark, and aim to achieve a level of credits generated through business operations and avoided CO₂ emissions that significantly exceeds our Group’s CO₂ emissions.
  2. New indicators: CO₂ emissions and avoided CO₂ emissions (newly added)
  3. New targets: CO₂ emissions 30,000 t-CO₂ or less, avoided CO₂ emissions 1,500,000 t-CO₂ (2050)

※As our Group does not own many plants and generates little greenhouse gas emissions other than CO₂, we used CO₂ emissions as the indicator for evaluating the climate-related risks and opportunities.
Scope 3 emissions are currently being calculated by category and are thus not included in the targets.

■Background

We have selected and focused on particular businesses and promoted initiatives since our inception to create a business portfolio that does not include thermal power generation, coal, and other carbon-intensive businesses. In addition, all projects--investments, important contracts, significant asset purchases--are implemented in line with the Group's sustainability policy and key issues (materiality). We have thus developed a governance system for management and monitoring to ensure that our Group does not engage in carbon-intensive businesses. Thanks to these extensive efforts to control our environmental impact, CO₂ emissions (Scope 1, 2) from Group operations are just under 30,000 t-CO₂ , which is extremely small relative to our size.

Since 2022, we have been working toward our GHG-related goals of becoming carbon neutral*1 by 2025, carbon negative*2 at minus 150,000 t-CO₂ by 2030, and carbon negative at minus 1,000,000 t-CO₂ by 2050. Our avoided emissions exceeded 1,000,000 t-CO₂ in FY2024, due primarily to our biomass fuel business and Joint Crediting Mechanism-based projects. We will therefore raise our target for future avoided emissions by 50%, from 1,000,000 t-CO2 to 1,500,000 t-CO₂. Our target for FY2025 is set conservatively at 800,000 t-CO₂, based on the current volume of signed business contracts contributing to avoided CO₂ emissions.

(*1) Carbon neutral is a state where the CO₂ emissions (Scope 1, 2) of our Company and Group are balanced with the credits generated by our Group through the forest conservation project and JCM project or avoided emissions.

(*2) Carbon negative is a state where the credits generated by our Company and Group through the forest conservation project and JCM project or avoided emissions exceed(s) the CO₂ emissions (Scope 1, 2) of our Group.

■Kanematsu’s Envisioned Goal

One of Kanematsu’s medium-term management plan, integration 1.0, launched in April 2024 aims to position the company as “a solutions provider leading the transformation of efficient and sustainable supply chains” and green transformation is one of the key initiatives.

We have actively engaged in a forest conservation project, Joint Crediting Mechanism project, and renewable energy-related projects in recent years, through which we aim to achieve a level of credits and avoided CO₂ emissions that significantly exceed our Group’s CO₂ emissions. As a trading company playing a connecting role in the supply chain, we believe it is our mission to contribute to the reduction of global emissions and decarbonization of the world.

Although this approach does not align with the definitions presented in the Science Based Targets (SBT) and other international standards, it embodies our commitment to always be a company group contributing to Japan and the international community, considering our business structure and model and our aspirations as a trading company.
